KARACHI, (AP) - Two passenger trains collided Tuesday outside this southern port city, killing two and injuring at least 11 people, many of them seriously.

Railway officials have confirmed two of their officials were killed when the trains collided outside Jhampir, 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of Karachi.

They say another 11 people were injured when the Awami Expressand Shah Latif passenger trains slammed into each other.

Two cars were demolished, they said. Eyewitnesses earlier feared several people had died in the accident. Emergency workers were at the site struggling to work through the wreckage to determine the exact numbers of injured and whether anyone had died.

According to a railway official Mohammed Shakil the two trains were travelling in the same direction and the Shah Latif train rear ended the Awami Express.

It's not clear whether the Awami Express was moving or was stopped.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known, but Pakistan's railway system is archaic and accidents have been frequent.
