JAKARTA (AP)-Indonesia has canceled an international celebration to mark the birthday of Islam's Prophet Mohammed because invited Muslim leaders are too busy to attend, the official Antara news agency reported Tuesday.
Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi had been among several heads of government asked to attend the event that would have taken place in Jakarta on Thursday.
"Some leaders from Islamic countries will be busy on that date," Antara quoted Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Minister Alwi Shihab as saying in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, Pakistan's military ruler, Gen. Peruez Musharraf, and Khadafi had been among those invited by Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid.
Shihab was in Cairo with Wahid for a conference of leaders from developing nations.
