TOKYO (AP) - Need a place to sit? Organizers of a flower show in western Japan have a seat with plenty of room: a 555-meter (1,832 foot) bench touted as the world's longest.
The wooden mega-bench was unveiled Wednesday. It took five days to build and seats about 900 people, event spokesman Hideki Izumi said.
The bench is longer than the current world record-holder - a 460.9-meter (1,521-foot) bench in Japan's Ishikawa prefecture that is listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
Organizers will not register the new bench with Guinness, since they plan to dismantle it when the six-month Japan Flora 2000 expo on Awajishima Island, about 480 kilometers (300 miles) from Tokyo, ends in September.
"We just wanted to give people a place to sit and look at the flowers," Izumi said. |
