LONDON, JUNE 22 (AP) - British police are investigating a nurse in connection with the deaths of children in her care.
Essex county police said in a statement Thursday that they were investigating "allegations made against a nurse from the former Southend Community Care Services NHS Trust concerning care of patients."
Press reports said the investigation centered on the deaths of nine boys and nine girls, aged from eight weeks to 17 years, between 1996 and 1999.
The Trust supplies health care workers to a variety of facilities in the community, and the incidents being investigated took place more than one location, police said.
The nurse, who was not identified, has been suspended, they said.
The statement said police had been called in by the Trust – now called the South Essex Mental Health and Community Care NHS Trust - following concerns raised by an unrelated internal investigation.
The children's families had been informed of the investigation, police said. The investigation will bring back memories of Beverley Allitt, a nurse convicted of killing four young children at the hospital where she worked in the early 1990s. Her case led to tighter checks on the mental state of applicants for nursing. |
