NAHA, Japan (AP) - Police on Okinawa arrested a U.S. Air Force serviceman on suspicion he drove through a red light and hit a pedestrian in the latest in a string of alleged crimes involving the U.S. military. Sgt. Johnny S. Miller, stationed at the Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, was arrested after returning to the street corner where he allegedly hit 27-year-old company worker Takeya Higa, said police official Jun Yogi. Miller, 21, allegedly fled after hitting Higa, and told police he was not the driver when he later returned to the site, said Yogi. Officers, however, grew suspicious and arrested him. Higa was slightly injured on the elbow and legs, and did not require hospitalization, said Yogi. Miller's hometown or the maximum penalty he faced if convicted were not immediately known. He was in the custody of Okinawan police Sunday. Police on July 3 charged a Marine on suspicion he broke into an unlocked apartment in Okinawa City and crept into the bed of a 14-year-old junior high school student. The girl's mother, awakened by her screams, says she found the drunk, half-naked Marine on top of the girl, kissing and fondling her. The incidents were expected to spark protests during the G-8 summit that will be hosted in Okinawa from July 21-23. |
