ANKARA (AP) - A passenger train partially derailed in western Turkey, injuring 15 people, a Turkish newspaper reported Thursday. Authorities said intense heat had twisted a segment of railroad tracks, causing six of the train's cars to derail near the city of Eskisehir on Wednesday. Some 200 other passengers continued their trip aboard another train from Eskisehir to Istanbul, the newspaper Hurriyet said. Temperatures have surpassed 40 C (104 F) across much of Turkey - well above seasonal averages - in the heat wave that has struck southeast Europe recently. The heat wave has claimed the lives of 18 Turks in heat-related incidents or illnesses over the past two weeks, the newspaper said. The Turkish government declared a public holiday Thursday and Friday after meteorologists predicted more extreme conditions. |
