LONDON (AP) - In a break with royal tradition, Queen Mother Elizabeth may get a birthday honors list of her own to mark her 100th year, Buckingham Palace said Saturday. The move would be a one-off gesture in recognition of the contribution she has made to the nation over the last century, the palace said. The honors - bestowed to people for their contributions to their professions and to charity - would take the form of Royal Victorian Orders and be announced on or close to the Queen Mother's birthday on August 4. "The idea of a very small honors list is one of the ideas which is being considered," said a palace spokesman, speaking with customary anonymity. The reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is the only person normally allowed to bestow honors, which she does on New Year's Day and on her official birthday in June. The lists are selected by the government to honor people in all walks of life on behalf of the British nation. The Sunday Telegraph reported that staff from the Queen Mother's office and from the 320 charities which she is involved with were likely to figure in a special birthday list. |
