NEW DELHI (AP) - Another white tiger died at a zoo in eastern India, where 12 other tigers have died of a bacterial disease spread by flies, officials said Saturday. India's Supreme Court has ordered a federal investigation into the deaths of the tigers over the last one month at the Nandankanan zoo in Bhubaneshwar, capital of Orissa state. Some reports have blamed rotten meat for the deaths of the tigers, but zoo officials said that the animals were killed by Trypanosomiasis, a bacterial disease for which they were being treated with antibiotics. On Friday night, one of the tigers that had been recovering from the antibiotics suddenly fell ill and died, United News of India news agency reported. A veterinarian conducted an autopsy on Saturday, Press Trust of India news agency said. Results of the laboratory test would help officials determine the cause of the death, it said. The zoo now has 18 white tigers. |
