CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) - Murder mystery writer Patricia Moyes, who published over 40 books in a writing career that spanned four decades, has died in the British Virgin Islands, police said. She was 77. Moyes, a British citizen, died Aug. 2 on the island of Virgin Gorda, police in the British Caribbean territory said Friday. Police listed her name as Patricia Haszard, her married name. Authorities could not say Friday what the cause of death was. Her first mystery novel, "Dead Men Don't Ski," in 1959 introduced the character Detective Inspector Henry Tibbett, the protagonist of 20 mystery novels that Moyes published over the next 35 years. The popular series included such titles as "The Sunken Sailor" (1961), "Death on the Agenda" (1962)," Murder by Threes" (1965), "Many Deadly Returns" (1970) and "Black Widower" (1975). "Many Deadly Returns," also titled "Who Saw Her Die," was a nominee for the 1971 best novel Edgar Award, presented by the Mystery Writers of America. She published 21 books not featuring Henry Tibbett, which included "The Faithful Cat" (1983), "Who Killed Father Christmas?" (1980) and "The Small Train Robbery" (1982). Moyes moved to Virgin Gorda island over two decades ago, said Royal Virgin Islands Police Inspector Philip Glasgow. Her publisher, Henry Holt, was not available for comment. Details on her survivors and funeral plans were not immediately available. |
