JAKARTA (AP) - A mob in western Sumatra burned to death three men they accused of stealing sheep, police said Monday. A police officer in the town of Natar said hundreds of villagers on Saturday night dragged the three alleged thieves from their homes and took them to a soccer field where they were doused with gasoline and set alight. "We're still searching for the culprits who killed them," said Sgt. Murdoyo. Natar is located about 250 kilometers (150 miles) northwest of Jakarta. Indonesia has been hit by widespread civil unrest and lawlessness in recent years because of economic hardship, political turbulence and ethnic and religious tensions. Lynchings of alleged criminals are a common occurrence. |
