LAKE PLACID, New York (AP) - President Bill Clinton closed a short family vacation with a brisk round of golf, while his wife, a Senate candidate, cleared out early to campaign. The Clinton family holed up in upstate New York's Adirondack Mountains until Sunday to celebrate Clinton's 54th birthday and to stay mostly out of sight as Vice President Gore began his post-convention campaign swing. Hillary Rodham Clinton bookended the holiday with political appearances. Friday night she and the president both spoke to a local Democrat Party picnic, and on Sunday she left their woodsy retreat for campaign appearances in the city of Buffalo. When she left, the president was playing 18 holes on a picturesque golf course skirted by the mountains. Afterward, during a stop back at his weekend residence, Clinton caught a little of the PGA Championship on television, including a dramatic moment when it was tied after 72 holes.
He ended his visit to Lake Placid late Sunday and flew to the Clintons' suburban New York home. Clinton set the tone for the weekend when he told local Democrats that he is now neither his family's candidate nor his party's leader. From now on, Clinton said, he is going to be a "citizen activist." That lower profile did not stop Clinton from shaking hands along the route of his motorcade, and the family drew an enthusiastic crowd when they stopped for ice cream after a birthday dinner in Saturday night. |
