LOS ANGELES (AP) - Actors on strike against the advertising industry took their cause to the streets. Hundreds of actors went on a protest march Monday and gathered at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunset Boulevard in the 15th week of the strike involving the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. "They need to get back to the negotiating table," actor Richard Crenna said, criticizing the industry's wage proposals so far as inadequate. Federal mediators' efforts to restart talks last month between the unions - representing 135,000 actors - and the ad industry were unsuccessful. SAG and AFTRA want to change the industry's compensation structure to give actors "pay-per-play" residuals for both network and cable TV commercials. Advertisers want to pay flat fees for both. According to the ad industry, ad production during the strike that began May 1 has remained close to normal with the use of nonunion performers.
