ISLAMABAD (AP) - Pakistani troops repulsed an Indian assault on a border post in the disputed valley of Kashmir early Monday, killing at least three Indian soldiers and wounding 10, a Pakistan army spokesman said. In a predawn attack, about 100 Indian soldiers tried to capture a Pakistani post in Lipa sector, about 120 kilometers (72 miles) north of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-ruled Kashmir, the spokesman said on the customary condition of anonymity. But the Indians were beaten back and seen dragging their dead and wounded as they retreated under the cover of heavy artillery and mortar fire, he said. Pakistan has fought three wars with India since the British rule ended on the subcontinent in 1947. Two wars were fought over Kashmir, which is divided between Pakistan and India, while the third over Bangladesh, which was then East Pakistan. Both the countries lay claim to a united Kashmir and regularly trade fire at the disputed border. Pakistan says Indian firing has increased at its border villages in recent weeks, killing and wounding scores of civilians. India accuses Pakistan of fomenting an 11-year long insurgency in its held-Kashmir. Islamabad denies the charge and says it gives only political and moral help to Kashmiris, who either want to merge with Islamic Pakistan or win complete independence. |
