NEW DELHI, SEPT 19 (UNB/AP) - An unidentified Indian American was detained after he entered the bedroom of Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his state visit to the United States, The Hindustan Times newspaper reported Tuesday. The newspaper said Vajpayee was not in his room Saturday when the man entered his room at Blair House and was questioned by a commando of the Special Protection Group, that guards current and former Indian prime ministers. Vajpayee was attending a reception attended by Indian Americans. The man said he had an appointment with the prime minister, but was detained after Vajpayee's secretary confirmed that the visitor was not expected. The newspaper added there was no evidence the man was harmed or wanted to hurt Vajpayee. U.S. Secret Service officials said there had been a security lapse and handcuffed and questioned the man. The agents also detained a woman accompanying him, who was waiting outside the building, the paper said. It did not say whether any charges were brought against the two. Vajpayee ended his visit Monday and stopped at Frankfurt, Germany, on his way home. |
