COLOMBO, (AP)- Twenty-four Tamil rebels were killed and six soldiers were wounded in confrontations in Sri Lanka's northern Jaffna Peninsula, the government said Monday. Eighteen militants were killed on Sunday and four soldiers were wounded in a confrontation in Jaffna city's outskirts, while four rebels were killed when the troops destroyed a rebel bunker closeby, said government spokesman Ariya Rubasinghe in the daily security brief. Two rebels were killed and two soldiers were wounded in another shootout on Sunday. The incidents took place five-25 kilometers (three-15 miles) east of Jaffna city. There is no way to verify reports as journalists are not allowed by both sides into the war zone, except on rare guided tours by the military. Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels are fighting to carve out a homeland for the country's 3.2 million Tamils in the north and east. More than 62,400 people have been killed since the war broke out in 1983. |
