Skin Care

of Babies

It can take a few weeks for your baby’s skin to settle down. Meanwhile, she/he may come out in spots or rashes that are generally harmless. These  following are the most common rashes:

Milia: Known as milk spots, these usually appear around the nose or forehead. They’re caused by blocked sebaceous glands and look like tiny white spots. You should never squeeze them. They require no treatment and will vanish in a few days.

New Born Jaundice:

Jaundice may give your baby's skin a yellowish tinge during her first few days. This is usually because her immature liver is unable to deal with the amount of bile (bilirubin) in her blood. Your doctor may advise you to feed your baby often and expose her to daylight. In severe cases, hospital treatment with ultraviolet light may be needed.

Heat rash:  These pinprick red spots are caused by over wrapping your new baby . Make sure he isn’t too warm by feeling the back of her neck or stomach. Check with the doctor if you’re worried.

Your baby’s  arms and legs may look slightly blue for a few weeks. She won’t be  good  at controlling  her body temperature until she lays down some fat. This uneven skin coloration will disappear when she becomes more active.

In dark – skinned babies, color can take time to develop as your baby’s final pigmentation may take weeks to establish  itself . See the doctor about any changes in your baby’s color that worry you .
