Childhood
I was born is my maternal grandfathers
place on 29 December,1947 in the village of Machimpur in Noakhali. I
never felt any avoidance from my parents part. Rather in response to
the remark of relatives that I should have been a boy , my father
used to tell "Look! I am proud of my daughter. She is no less than a boy".
Though born is Noakhali, I grew up in Bagerhat and
Rangpur owing to my father's transferable profession. Teaching profession of my father, my mother's cultural mindset, inspiration
from my maternal relatives and overall the cultural atmosphere
of Rangpur-- all made me. My father was a man of a mind as broad as
the sky. He never set prohibitions for me. He gave me proper chance to
flourish my genius.
I got first prize by reciting the
poem 'Omar Faruq ' by Golan Mostafa when I was in class
ii. I made my cultural debut as a dancer. Daring my study life I
played a vital role in cultural arena.
Study life
After completion of my primary and
secondary education in Rangpur I took my college education in
Dhaka. I completed a course on gymnastics from the college of gymnastics
in Dhaka. From department of Bangla, Dhaka University I finished my
M A on Bangla literature. I took a higher education in England on
" Theory and Practice of Child-care."
Since my study life I am in service.
I had to manage with patience and perseverance to keep in both study
and service. In the school where I joined for the first time I
had to take responsibilities of the Hostel Super. I had
to take
leave for my examination. The Principal
came to visit the hostel at the same time. She was very angry with
me because of my absence though she knew that I was in leave. It
shocked me to a great extent. Eventually I resigned.
My career: How I started
After completion of my study in college of
gymnastics I joined the same collage as gymnastics teacher
at the request of my teachers. Initially my father wanted me to
study. But he gave in to my wish when I explained to him that I
could study well enough while in service.
In 1968 I joined Vikarunnesa Nun school.
Later
when it became a college I was appointed a teacher of Bangla
Department in the college section. I also went on
performing the duty of gymnastics teacher simultaneously. I built up
a good
number of sports performers from my school and college.
Among them I must mention the names of Shamsunnahar in javelin
throwing
, Romana Ahmed, Saiyda Zabbar, Nargis Ferdous and Sabina in
badminton, Sayeda, Ruchi, Sabina and Popy in cycling and so on.
I innovated the tradition of volleyball,
bosket ball and football among girls in Vikarunnesa Nun school .
In 1979 I went to England for higher
education. There I studied in Hartford shire College for one year. The
next one year I worked in BBC Bangla Department. I came
back in 1982 when I was appointed Associate Secretary of
Bangladesh Mohila Krira Sangstha. In 1983 I established
a school called 'Ankur Tutorial Home'. It was for children between the age-limit
of 3 to 6 years. I started it with seven children.
Beside my profession , I played my role as a
sports organizer. As a teacher I was successful since the very beginning.
In addition I began another chapter of my career. I made my
debut as a drama artist. In
1966 I joined Dhaka Radio as a drama player. My first
performance was in the historical play " Nawab Sirajuddowla" in
Rangpur. I played the role of Aleya. In 1966 I acted in Jasim Uddin's 'Beder
Maye' in All Pakistan Falk Drama Conference held in Lahore. I acted
in the central roles of about 300 plays. I dramatized three plays in
Radio two on stage. Leading the drama team called Shanteer
Balaka, I participated
in a drama festival in Turkey in 1997. I wrote a good number of small
stories, fictions, sports articles and funny write-ups. All the
writings by me
are awaiting publication .
Impression of my family members about
my profession
My parents never hindered me going on with
my career. My
husbands family is also cooperative. They care for my welfare. Above
all my relatives sustain my profession.
I got married after being back from England
. My husband is an officer of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society. He never set prohibitions for me in my household ,
social and
cultural works. Without his
cooperation I could not have done what I have. He
is broadminded and of good character. He is the example of an ideal
husband.
Ups and downs in my career
In my workplace I made my room by dint
of integrity and handwork. After abandoning my service I had to struggle
hard to establish my own organization. It look some time to achieve financial
solvency of the organization .
Environment of my service place
Since I always worked in
women's organizations I never faced any adverse situation. As an organizer and
an artist I managed everything
properly. Nevertheless, sometimes I noticed jealousy of male associates
as I proved myself more efficient than them.
Probable reaction to prohibition
I believe in empowerment of eligible
women. Why a women with abilities to serve the society
should keep away from the same? No incident of prohibition against my
profession came so far. I ,Therefore, cannot tell how would I have
reacted to such a situation.
How I adjust my
time
Both my husband and me are hardworking.
We are not ashamed of works which are our duties. I manage all odd works
including shopping. I do more than what is possible for a
woman . I do not waste even a minute. I believe man is born only
once and there is a lot of things to do.
My View as a woman
If I lag behind thinking that I am a
woman ,I will never be able to proceed. Women should come forward to
compete with men. Otherwise men will practice their dominating
tendency. I Believe in equality between men and woman. I dare say women
cotta system
in parliament is insulting for womankind.
As women we have to bear in mind that we
are no less capable than men. Why should we seek kindness? We have
to prove that we can qualify in competitions. These are my beliefs I
cherish in me. I think myself a complete human being. I am
grateful to my parents who brought me up and above all to the almighty. I am content to be a woman.
