Rise of a Generation by Asif Mahfuz

I knew her name since I was a child. In 1994, I got a series of stamps on the martyred intellectuals. Meherunnissa, the poet, was in that series. At times I thought I knew her personally, a smiling face looking at me through spectacles. Later, I knew about her works and how she and her family were killed on the end of March ???71 by Razakars.

Now, 42 years after that incident, the news of her killer not getting the deserved punishment, stunned me. These war criminals committed crimes which were brutal and heinous in every way; not just the killings, but the ways of killings as well. Lifetime punishment might not be enough in cases like these; where criminals can bail out in favorable conditions.

Since the political and intellectual community did not protest, the students and the young generation had to step up, just like before. And so they really did, in a massive nonviolent, apolitical gathering to show dissent, chanting slogans, reminding the days of 1971.

It started in 5th February, 2013, after Kader Mollah???s verdict, an unduly lenient punishment for someone who beheaded a poet, killed her family. Other than killing hundreds more during the liberation war, earning the nickname ???kashai (butcher) Kader???. Moreover, as to rub salt on the wound, he showed victory sign after the verdict. This was the spark. It started with few scattered groups protesting in Shahbagh. Then people voluntarily started to join from all sections of society and parts of the country, the rest is history.

Now, thousands of people are protesting in the square, night and day, with relentless chaos of patriotic slogans and songs, about revenge, justice, emotion and identity as Bengali. With time, the movement spread all over the world, resulting in one of the biggest non violent, apolitical movements across the world. Reports and pictures from all over the world, from Alaska to Australia started to pour in.

The nature of the protest itself is unprecedented; placards, posters, banners, street paintings, poetry recitals, songs, candle light processions, became weapons of mass protest. Self appointed volunteers maintained order and security. Food and water were brought and distributed by everyone. Even a beggar bought packets of biscuits with his day???s income to distribute. No mass movement of this magnitude was nonpartisan in Bangladesh after liberation. Also, this is the most gender friendly movement Bangladesh has ever seen, women and girls are staying whole night to protest, safe and as equals. This is unprecedented in this subcontinent.
So what made this possible? Was it politics that united everyone? I do not think so, since the movement is nonpolitical. Then again why this movement is perceived as nonpolitical? Literally the term “Politics” (from Greek politikos “of, for, or relating to citizens”) means “the art or science concerned with guiding or influencing governmental policy or people, when more than two people are involved.”

Theoretically Shahbagh movement perfectly fits the “traditional definition” of politics. The answer might lie on the perceived definition of politics in Bangladesh, “Any activity by the ruling party to remain in power or by the opposition party to come to power or by rest of the parties to create impact in power-play”. So though, according to global definition, Shahbagh Movement is political, in context of Bangladesh this movement is apolitical. The organizers have refused t politicians to take the stage rather freedom fighters and social activists were invited to speak.
There were people of every age, from 15 to 65, kids with parents, sons with elder mothers, freedom fighters with grandsons and daughters. People of every generation and age actively participated in the movement, though the younger generation participated en masse.

Was religion the uniting factor? Since most of the convicted persons are from a religion based party, this is a pertinent point. But people with communist ideology and women and girls wearing hijab protested side by side. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Atheists all are united for one single reason. It is not against the religion rather against the persons misusing it.
The movement is all about justice being served, atrocities being punished, about the morality and conscience of a nation, the entire nation standing up to the task of demanding proper justice, united by the one tie that binds it together, the spirit of 1971.

The movement is not against any political party; rather against the persons who committed almost every crime that one can imagine. Some are saying to ban religion based political parties, history proved again and again, that it is not possible without changing the minds of people. USA banned white supremacist klu klax Klan 3 times and each time it resurfaced with a different name with the same people behind it. One cannot blame religion for some people???s wrong doing. Religion is perfect, we are not.
The issues of pro and anti freedom fighters have been issues for the last 42 years. Let???s do justice for the first time, let???s bury the matter. The self declared killers, Razakars, should be punished. Only then we can look forward rather than looking behind. Can???t deny, have been looking backwards for the last 42 years. Only after this issue is solved the whole nation look forward to other issues.

But ultimately the judicial system has to be upheld, to prove that this trial and the future ones will be neutral. More than that, the justice system should act independently without pressure. But this one time the law has to be amended, since the people is not for the law, rather the law is for the people and should follow the verdict and needs of the people. But then again this can???t be precedence where people pressure can influence justice.

The next few weeks will be crucial. There is fear and hope. Fear that the movement might be politicized and hope that the protest will become a movement for a fair trial and for a final justice for misdeeds done in 1971.

Jamaat’s Terrorism in the Name of Islam: It’s Time to Finish the Unfinished War of 1971

Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and their leaders, accused of genocide and crimes against humanity during the Bangladeshi war of independence in 1971, have always tried to use the cloak of religion to distract people from their misdeeds. In 2013, Jamaat is repeating the history upon the verdict of one of their top leaders, Delwar Hossain Sayeedi’s 1971 war criminal trial. Sayeedi is given death penalty by the International crime tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh. Whole Bangladesh was waiting for the verdict of the most sensational war crimes case for last 16 months since the charges had been framed against the person best known across Bangladesh for his sermons. As declared earlier by Jamaat “Civil war and Jihad on Sayeedi’s death penalty”, Jamat-e-Islami started deadly violence all over Bangladesh. At least 44 people, including four policemen, were killed and scores were injured in a spasm of violence in parts of the country yesterday after Jamaat and its student wing Shibir activists clashed with law enforcers to protest against a death penalty to Sayeedi. The minorities, especially Hindus, are attacked in the name of Jihad and 6 temples were burnt.

In 1971 unprecedented level of crimes against humanity was committed in Bangladesh by Pakistani army and their Bangladeshi collaborators. The political group supporting the Pakistani Army is Jamaat-e-Islami. The Bangladeshi collaborators tried to justify their heinous actions with the use of “Islam”. Those traitors abused the name of “Islam” as their weapon to kill, rape and savage this piece of land which Bangladeshis consider as their mother. The traitors, always tried to create a conflict between “love for Bangladesh” and “love for Islam”. They have been successful in utilizing the pro-Islamic sentiment of common Bangladeshis as well as world Muslims to gather support towards them. Since the war crime tribunal of Bangladesh started its trial, the Jamaat-e-islami’s propaganda reached its culmination. Now they have come out of the shadow and openly promoting the utter lie that the whole trial is just an eye wash while the reality of this trial is to demolish Islam from Bangladesh. They are creating anarchy and provoking their young Muslim activists to get involved in fighting with the law enforcement agency. They are trying to present this personal clash as “Jihad”. WRONG. This is just a pattern. Whenever Jamaat-e-Islami wants to establish their illegal personal agenda, they attach the “jihad sentiment” to give legitimacy to it. In the name of Jihad Jamaat-e-Islami not only kills general people, they even set up fire in the Mosque and burn prayer mats. Most Islamic scholars, including the Khatib of (chief imam) of the national mosque Baitul Mukarram urged Jamaat-e-Islami to stop vandalizing mosques in the name of “Islam”.

In 1971, when Pakistani army attacked Bangladesh in the middle of a dark night and killed innocent Bangladeshi people in their sleep, Jamaat-e-Islami leaders portray it as an “Islamic” killing. WRONG. In 1971, almost a quarter million women, including minorities and underage, were raped and tortured by Pakistani armies and their collaborators. The traitor of the country name it “Islamic”. WRONG. In 1971, 5th largest Genocide of the human history was perpetrated by Pakistani army and their collaborators, Jamaat-e-Islami tried to make it controversial by saying that it was an “Islamic” war against Pakistan and India. WRONG. When thousands of war children were born after 1972, Jamaat-e-Islami created so much emotional atrocities in the name of Islam to the mothers of the war children that many of them either committed suicide or left Bangladesh. WRONG.

Now, when the youth of Bangladesh has risen and vowed to bring the war criminals of 1971 under trial, it can be assumed how far they can go in using “The Holy Quran” and “Islam” as a shield. With the verdict of Capital punishment of Jamaat-e-Islami’s top leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, accused of 20 heinous charges, Jamaat-e-Islami is making a desperate attempt towards creating social unrest. They had previously threatened to take the country towards a civil war. But they have got very little support from the general mass. Jamaat-e-Islami is spreading false propaganda of “saving Islam” and declaring “Jihad” to save their rapist leaders. In the western world Jamaat-e-Islam spreads money and employ lobbyist to buy out world opinion; however, in Muslim world the tool is “Islam”.

But we the Bangladeshis, Alhamdulillah, historically did our own fight and we have been victorious. We became independent. We achieved our freedom. We overcome all the post war adversities. Now it is time to stop all the WRONGs and uproot those religion sellers. With the rise of 2013 Shahbag generation, we will not let any criminal to hide behind our Holy Quran. We will keep our Holy Quran “Holy” and save Its true dignity. Allah is “Right”. Allah gives opportunities, even to the worst of the worst criminals, to come to the right path. But at the end Supreme Justice Allah sends soldiers to destroy the rotten souls.

Bangladesh Needs ???Genocide Denial” Act, Similar To Holocaust Denial Legislation, To Stop Anti-???71 Groups

It is a matter of great regret and anguish that, with the up-rise of Shahbag generation, some news papers in Bangladesh are openly utilizing the power of press in creating unrest and anarchy in the country. The distortion of news to create sensation is not uncommon in Bangladesh. Many under-radar news papers and magazines exaggerate and twist facts to attract readers and to increase their circulation. This type of yellow journalism, although considered unprofessional and unethical, was overlooked from the freedom of press notion. But some recent media involvement in the prosecution of war criminals of 1971 war of independence, the attempt to manipulate prosecutorial process, the spreading of historical lies in favor of the charged war criminals, leaking insider information of the ongoing prosecution and finally defamation of the brutally killed blogger Rajib Haider through unsubstantiated, inciteful and dubious posts crossed all boundaries of decency, ethics or even legal limits.

The actions of the Pakistani army as well as their Bangladeshi collaborators and abettors, known as Razakars, killed three million Bangladeshi civilians, raped more than a quarter million women and brutally massacred top intellectuals. Currently the war crimes committed by the ???Razakars??? are being prosecuted by the International War Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for the heinous atrocities they had committed during the 9 months of 1971. It was expected that people of Bangladesh, including visual and press media personnel, unanimously show due respect to the trial. But, unfortunately, one political party Jamaat-E-Islami Bangladesh, its leaders and followers and the press and visual media backed by the Jamaate-E-Islami Bangladesh are in denial of the 1971 genocide committed by the Pakistani army and Razakars. Daily Naya Diganta, Dainik Shangram and Daily Inquilab and in particular Daily Amar Desh, are distorting the facts of 1971 and also spreading false news to provoke mass people by using religious sentiments. These news papers are not only defaming the people who actively support the war criminal prosecution but also using Islamic sentiment in an attempt to distract from the overwhelming mass demand of Justice against war criminals as well as the killing of the ICT activist by alleging him as an atheist and spreading anti-Islamic propaganda on his name. They have also been questioning the intention of the current Government for trying the war criminals. These news papers have a big influence on today???s (February 22, 2013) violence launched by the so called ???Islamist??? groups. Today at least four people were killed and ??over 150 inured, including 7 journalist, many of them with bullets, when Jamaat and Shibir activists clashed with police and ruling party men in most big cities in Bangladesh [1], [2].This is the direct result of the false and abusive news spread by these news papers about the anti-Islamic mentality of some of the Shahbag activists. They clearly are trying to use Islamic sentiment of the pious and religious Bangladeshis to stop the movement of ???Generation 2013???.

B

This has to be stopped. Although in Bangladesh, news media enjoys freedom of speech but there should be a limit to that, at least when it comes to our center of pride, the war of independence in 1971. What cannot to be tolerated under any circumstances is their manipulation of facts regarding our independence war to support a particular ideological position and hiding their anti Bangladesh feeling under the guise of free speech. It is time for the Bangladesh Government to pass a legislation to prosecute anyone, specially in the media, who shows denial, questions or distorts the 1971 war facts, or shows support for convicted war criminals. The Holocaust denial legislation enacted by Israel and the twelve European countries (Spain, Romania, Germany, Austria, Lithuania, Poland, France, Switzerland, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Belgium and the Czech Republic) can be taken as an example where it stipulates that ???A person who, in writing or by word of mouth, publishes any statement denying or diminishing the proportions of acts committed in the period of the Nazi regime which are crimes against the Jewish people or crimes against humanity, with intent to defend the perpetrators of those acts or to express sympathy or identification with them, shall be liable to imprisonment for five years???[3]. Even U.S.A, the country where the freedom of speech is protected under first amendment, prevents Holocaust denial speech or activities if it poses imminent threat of violence.

jamaat

Our war of independence in 1971 is a source of all our inspiration. It defines us as a nation. Each and every Bangladeshi, irrespective of their religious, political and cultural views, must be respectful about the 1971 facts. It is one of largest genocides in the history of the world where most of the talented Bangladeshi brains were killed in a very planned and systematic way. People who support the 1971 genocide or in denial about its facts actually try to establish either of the followings: create public sympathy for the war criminals under trial, undermine the legitimacy of the State of ??Bangladesh, or plant seeds of doubt about their own acts during the war. It is imperative for the Bangladesh Government to act wisely and decisively to bring a legislation to stop denial and distortion of 1971 facts. Until then you, the Shahbag generation, stay alert and stay vigilant.

Historical Timeline of Jamaat-E-Islami

1. Formally established on 26 August 1941, Jamaat -e – Islami’s (JI) intellectual inspiration came from the thoughts of Sayyid Abul A???la Maududi, a journalist, theologian and political thinker.??The vision of its formations was (i) pan-Islamist in nature (Islamic state without boundary) (ii) to transcend the national boundaries to encompass all peoples and countries (iii) become the moral guardians of Pakistan: a holy community that did not dirty its hands in the mud of political wrangling??? [1, 2].??

2. Maududi vehemently rejected the creation of an independent state for Muslims and suggested that the new country Pakistani should be named as Napak-istan [19].??In Maududi’s own words?????The establishment and birth of Pakistan is equivalent to the birth of a beast.????????Muhammad Ali Jinnah???s place is not on the throne of leadership. He deserves to face trial as a traitor??? [12, 13].
After years of strong opposition towards the creation of Pakistan,??denouncing Jinnah as a religious lightweight and decrying democracy as satan???s handiwork, Maududi made an astonishing 180 degree flip and??embraced Pakistan, Jinnah and democracy in 1948. This is when he moved from India to Pakistan [11].

3. Moududi??portrayed the Jamaat as “the moral guardians of Pakistan: a holy community that did not dirty its hands in the mud of political wrangling??? [1].??JI initially limited its role in Pakistan to spreading Islam???s message and social work for the refugees who had migrated from India [3] during the partition. However ??the party’s initial position changed before long and Jammaat-i-Islami initiated a campaign to establish an Islamic state and involved itself in the country???s politics [2].

4. During the partition of India, princely states were given the right to choose to side with either India or Pakistan. Kashmir, a princely state, with a majority Muslim population was expected to join Pakistan but the Hindu Maharaja of the state decided it would accede with India. Pakistan, in response, declared jihad (holy war) against the Indian army in the territory. Maududi, a scholar on the subject of jihad, disagreed with the Pakistani government on terming the war a jihad and went on to make his criticism public.??This resulted in his arrest along with the arrest of other Jamaat leaders [1].??

5. Moududi began working to build an Islamic state and society. He relentlessly criticized the secular policies of the nascent state and berated Pakistani leaders for failing to create an Islamic political order.????In??1953, Maulana Maududi wrote a staunch pamphlet which criticized the Qadiyani sect as enemies of Islam and incited people against them. The pamphlet resulted in widespread riots and violence against this minority group. Numerous murders and widespread rape was reported as part of this violence. A military court arrested Maududi for the primary force behind instigating the raiot and sentenced him to death for sedition. Later the punishment was reduced to life sentence and finally he was released from Jail in 1957 after some changes in political spectrum in 1957 [4].

6. Jammat initially was completely against participating in any democratic process, especially in Pakistan, which they declared as a ‘non-Islamic’ country. Participating in their elections will make them hypocrites as it would make their practice go against their basic philosophy. Instead of directly participating in elections, Jamaat started supporting big-name islamic leaders and tried to gain influence in the government through their support [2].

7. In 1957, there came a drastic drift in their policy as Jamaat decided to participate in national election. From the bottom-up approach of changing individuals to bring changes in the society, and thus to the political structure, Jamaat-I-Islami decided to go for the top-down approach of power sharing in a democratic government and to infuse social and individual change from that position of governance [1].

8. Before the JI could make its debut in Pakistani politics, General Ayub Khan brought a military coup in Pakistan. Khan was seen as a secular figure who intended to keep religion separate from politics [1, 2].??In order to make Pakistan into a modern state, he passed the Muslim family laws in 1961. These laws abolished unmitigated polygamy, gave powers to the women by making it compulsory for husbands to seek their wives consent for a second marriage, and abolished the practice whereby a husband could divorce his wife by saying talaq (divorce) three times [1, 2]. Seen as very progressive and in contrast to the traditional understanding of Islam, JI strongly opposed these laws and tried to put pressure on Khan to repeal them.??

9. While opposing Ayub Khan in women empowerment, in 1965, JI was supporting Fatima Jinnah for her presidential campaign against Ayub Khan in 1965 even though it was against Maududi???s views on the social role of women [5]. But due to massive vote rigging Fatima Jinnah lost the 1965 election and General Ayub Khan managed to stay in power [5].

10. Towards the end of 1965, India-Pakistan war started. Ayub Khan appealed to Maududi to declare the war against India a jihad in order to legitimize the Pakistani army???s actions and to raise the morale of its soldiers [1]. Maudid, who was widely considered to be a scholar in Jihad, and who was vehemently in opposion to General Ayub, agreed to his proposiation. Ayub Khan’s??meeting with religious parties – mainly the Jamaat-i-Islami under Maulana ‘Abul ‘Ala Maududi – marked the beginning of “the military-mullah nexus” [6].

11. When general Yahya Khan, another secular and brutal military leader, took the power??in 1969, Jamaat went so far as to certify Yahya’s draft constitution as Islamic. The draft was authored by Justice A.R. Cornelius, Yahya’s law minister.[6, 7, 21]

12. The stage finally came for JI to test its political strength in 1970. Ayub???s successor, Yahya Khan held general elections in 1970 in which Jamaat-i-Islami took part [1] for the first time. The campaigned as a religious party and sought votes by clearly declaring that God (Allah) will be pleased if you voted for Jamaat. The expected the deeply religious people of the country would give a substantial presence in the government. Contrary to their high hopes, Jamaat received an embarrassing election result winning only 4 out of the 300 seats in the national assembly [2].

13. In 1971, General Yahya, along with the civilian politician Bhutto, planned one of the worst genocides of 20th century in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) . Jamaat supported and openly aided the Pakistan military in carrying out the genocide of unthinkable magnitude in the name of religion. The 1953 riots, killings and rapes, which led to the conviction of death penalty for Maududi, became pale against the horrific attrocities of Pakistani Army and Jamaat-i-Islami [20, 14].

14. The results of the 1970 elections and defeat in 1971 war in Bangladesh had dejected Maududi forcing him to return to his original vision of the party where it only existed as a holy community, in a domain separate from politics [1].

15. On 20th??December 1971, General Yahya stepped down as the president and Bhutto took the charge who remained as martial law administrator till 14th??August 1973. On 15th??August, he took the oath as Prime Minister of Pakistan under the newly promulgated 1973 constitution and employed??General Muhammad Zia ul-Haq as the army???s chief of staff.??1976, Bhutto summoned the general before the cabinet to explain his actions [8, 9].Later during his trial before the supreme court, Bhutto was to remark, ???I appointed a Chief of Staff belonging to the Jamaat-i-Islami and the result is before all of us [9, 10].?????His statement underscores the Jamaat???s increasing influence in the armed forces and the party???s role in bringing down his regime.

16. In 1976, General Zia-ul-Haq came to bringing down Bhutto???s government and imposing martial law in the country. Jamaat-i-Islami became hopeful to be a player in the national politics once again. Maududi supported Zia-ul-Haq and he was appointed as a senior statesman during Zia???s rule [1].

17. When Zia overthrew Bhutto in 1977, Maududi endorsed his Islamization initiative. Zia- ul-Haq met JI Chief Mian Tufail Mohammad for 90 minutes the night before Bhutto was hanged. The following day, the JI supporters took to the streets and distributed sweets to celebrate Bhutto???s death. Although the JI???s constitution prohibits coming into power using underground means, yet Jamaat was part of Zia???s cabinet holding the ministries of Information and Broadcasting, Production, Water and Power and National Resources [6].

18. Dr. Haider Maudoodi, the son of Maulana Maudoodi, has openly denounced the actions of Jamaat-i-Islami, the very same Jamaat his father formed and a Jamaat that is following his example to the letter. He stated in The Nation on 1/27/99 that his father was like a heroin peddler who would not allow his children to go near the drug. They never discussed Jihad at home, but he sold this idea to millions of others; Maududi never allowed any of his children to read any of his 80 books. While Jamaat-i-Islami was encouraging an uprising by Kashmiri???s against the government, Haider Maudoodi stated, ???Islam does not allow them taking up arms against the State??? and praised Pakistanis for not allowing religious extremists like Jamaat-i-Islami members from attaining many seats in the National Assembly of Pakistan.?????My father though he could only use the people who came to him. But in his old age, he did get a taste of his medicine. When he was on his deathbed, these Maulana???s treated him as dirt??? [13, 14, 15, 16].

19. Dr. Haider Maudoodi, the son of Maulana Maudoodi, also described in detail about how the Jamaat-e-islami conducted massive destruction, slaughtering of innocent people and rape of women by creating organizations such as Razakar, Al Badar etc.
20. According to Moulana Moududi’s nine children and Islamic scholars of Pakistan unanimously reached into the??conclusion that Jamaat-e-islami is the mother of all Pakistan’s????terrorism [17, 18, 13, 14, 15, 16].??

Surprising Silence about Shahbag in the US Media

There has been an ongoing massive protest happening in Bangladesh demanding prosecution and ensuring just justice for war criminals of its independence war in 1971. The peaceful protest of unprecedented scale has been taking place for the last eighteen days. The voices of Bangladesh have been tirelessly showing their conviction in protesting against the verdict of the??prosecuted 1971 war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah. The verdict was??announced??on February 5th, 2013 and it has been broadly deemed to be too lenient. The smile and victory sign shown by Quader Molla to the journalists will make anyone search for the deeper context of this verditct. But it was a little too much for the Bangladeshi people who have been agonizingly waiting for the last 42 years to finally have some justice. Within hours, hundreds and thousands of spontaneous??protesters gathered together in a central crossing of Dhaka city, known as Shahbag square.

During the 9 month long Liberation War in 1971, heinous atrocities of unthinkable magnitude were committed by Pakistani army along with their local collaborators – the pro-Pakistani political party ??in Bangladesh – “Jamaat-e-Islami???.??The Bangladeshi collaborators of Pakistani army was known as “Razakars”. They also formed a para-military group to actively participate in the atrocities. During the nine month of genocide,??which was one of the worst genocides of 20th century, some three million people were killed, nearly quarter million women were violated and over 10 million people were forced to take refuge in India to escape brutal persecution at??home. The perpetrators of the crimes could not be brought to justice, and this left an unfathomable abrasion on the country’s political awareness as well as the whole nation.??Bangladesh also had to deal with thousands of war children in the aftermath.??The initiative to prosecute the Bangladeshi war criminals started in 1973. The newly independent government of Bangladesh passed a law called the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act (ICT Act 1973) to investigate and prosecute the persons responsible for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and other crimes under international law committed in 1971. The act was a complete law in itself. But the barbaric assassination of the father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his 24 family members in 1975, stopped the process. The subsequent military rulers in Bangladesh rehabilitated the people accused of, and in some cases, convicted for crimes against humanity. The impunity the war criminals enjoyed held back political stability, facilitated rise of militancy, and helped in the degradation of the nation’s constitution with the inclusion of communalism.??Some of the war criminals were top leaders of the political party Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. By using the veil of a religious identity and Bangladeshi people’s religious sentiment,??Jamaaat-e-Islami, along with its leaders accused of crimes against humanity managed to create massive vandalism, killing, political unstability as well as produced religious??extremists. In 2008, Bangladesh Awamy league came to power with landslide mandate with the promise of finally prosecuting the war criminals. In 2010 the international war crime tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh started its work. Since the tribunal started its proceedings, numerous effort has been made to derail the process. Jamaat-e-Islami hired Cassidy and Associates for $310,000 (Tk 24 million) to lobby in the United States congress.

The peace-loving general mass of Bangladesh, especially the patriotic youth, desperately needing a closure on the wounds of war, were holding their breath towards the verdict against the war criminals. On February 5th, with the verdict of Quader Mollah, people just burst out with anger and rage and came down to street at??Shahbag square. Given the level of crime??committed??by Mollah, including killing of 344 civilians,??rape (including the rape of??minors) dozens of women;??abetting the Pakistani army; actively participating in the 1971 atrocities in Bangladesh, Bangladeshi?? people think that his sentence was too little too late. The outpour of emotion brought everyone out to street just like it happened to the Egyptian people in Tahrir Square. They were afraid that with the change of political power, these people will again get out from their life imprisonment and may even become cabinet members.

Hundreds of thousands of??protesters??have been literally sitting in at Shahbag square day in and day out demanding just justice for the??victims of 1971.??This protest has been completely apolitical and nonviolent, seeking to ensure that justice is done in the proper way. On the third day of the protest, the young people stood in silence for three minutes from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm. The whole country came to a stand still. Everywhere people stopped their work and stood in silence to show their solidarity with the youth protested in Shahbag. On February 14, the protest movement held a candle-light vigil. The world has probably not seen such a remarkable sight of peaceful protest.

The event has not gotten much attention in the American media. BBC has covered it. So has the Guardian. There have also been a couple of CNN i-reports. It is very difficult for any outsider to fathom the deep emotion associated with this protest movement. The language of the protest seeking capital punishment for the convicted war criminals has probably been at odds with some of the western media. But anyone who has visited Shahbag is bound to realize what a remarkable story it is. This is a story of the youth – the next generation, it is a story of the power of social media, and above all it is a story of our innate search for justice.

It is indeed surprising that the US media has been sleeping through the whole period. One must wonder what could be the reason for this apparent apathy. Could it be, could this possibly be that all the money that Jamaat has been spending all around the world, has also managed to buy the silence of the journalist leaders of the free world.
