Dhaka (UNB) – Commerce Minister Abdul Jalil yesterday said the present election system of the FBCCI must go to allow representation from all sectors in the country’s apex trade body. “Reform is a must to make FBCCI a total federal body for ensuring its due role in the private sector regime,” he said. The minister made the comment when an FBCCI delegation called on him at his office and requested him for amending the federation’s constitution on election of its executive body. The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) delegation was led by its president Abdul Awal Mintoo. Jalil also assured the FBCCI delegation to arrange khas land for establishing offices of the district chambers and asked for a list of those chambers without offices, meeting sources said. “The government is interested to assist all the district chambers in the country to activate them,” he said. The FBCCI delegation requested the Commerce Minister to reform the constitution to ensure a meaningful representation from all the important sectors of the country in the FBCCI. “It will be a non-functioning organisation unless there is a reform,” Mintoo told the Minister. In the present system of FBCCI executive committee election, representation from major chambers like DCCI, MCCI and BCI and sectors like garments, frozen food and jute were hardly seen. |
