Dhaka (UNB) – The 110-megawatt Haripur Barge-mounted Power Plant started generating electricity using natural gas from Tuesday evening. The conversion of the plant from imported fuel to gas will save about 20 to 25 million US dollars a year. This is for the first time in Bangladesh that a diesel engine power plant has been converted into gas, said Mehmood Mir, Chairman of the US-based power company, NEPC. “Use of gas as energy instead of fuel for the plant will reduce cost by 50 per cent while overall cost by 20 per cent,” he told newsmen. Mehmood, however, declined to disclose the reduction of power tariff following the conversion. “It will be decided by the Power Development Board,” he added. The 124 million US dollar Haripur barge-mounted plant went into commercial operation in June last year. Additional 10 million US dollars has been spent for the conversion. |
