Dhaka, Apr 25 (UNB)- US Ambassador John C Holzman today (Tuesday) said American investment in Bangladesh would go as high as 1.5 billion to 2 billion dollars if the projects that are proposed and are on line could be implemented.

“ In fact, we have a lot of successes” in US investment in Bangladesh, which has increased to 750 million dollars, he said adding, “It will be a lot more than that if the projects that are now on line and are proposed go forward.”

The US envoy made the remarks while opening the US Trade Center here on the US Embassy compound this morning.

The American companies are currently engaged in oil and gas, telecommunications and power sectors, and setting up of private container terminal in Chittagong.

About US-Bangladesh trade, Holzman said Bangladesh is enjoying a favorable trade with America. Bangladesh’s export to the US is 1.9 billion dollars while US export to Bangladesh is about 300 million dollars.

The Ambassador said the US Trade Center would facilitate greater business action between the two sides.

It will give services both to American businesses seeking investment scope in Bangladesh and Bangladeshi businesses seeking to buy American goods and services.

The center will provide market information, statistics and database about American companies.

Holzaman said the center would focus on promoting investment from America as well as American export to Bangladesh.

Leading Bangladeshi business leaders, including ICC’B president Mahbubur Rahman, FICCI president Wali Bhuiyan, MCCI president Latifur Rahman, DCCI president Aftabul Islam, CSE chairman Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury MP and political and economic counselor Dan Mozena were present on the occasion.
