April 30, 2000 SINGAPORE, APR 29 (AP) - Singapore and Japan are making progress in their study of setting up a free-trade agreement, officials said Saturday.
The topic came up during a meeting between Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono, Goh's office said in a statement.
"Mr. Kono noted that the Japan-Singapore joint study on a possible bilateral free trade agreement had thus far achieved more progress than was expected," the statement said.
Goh "expressed the hope that both governments would give a push for the successful conclusion of the study and a positive outcome," the statement added.
Officials from both countries agreed in December to launch the study.
