Dhaka, May 31 (UNB)- Two separate deals worth Tk 263 crore were signed here today with Russia for financing renovation of two antiquated power plants and technological erection of a new 210-megawatt one.

Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) and M/S Technopram Export of Russia signed the agreements at WAPDA Bhaban, officials said.

Under the first contract, rehabilitation and modernization of the first and second units of 55-megawatt plants at Ghorasal Power Station will be done at a cost of Tk 110.46 crore, including Tk 5 crore in PDB funds, in 20 months from the signing date.

As per the second deal, technological erection, guarantee operation, commissioning and civil work supervision of the under-construction 210MW thermal power plant at Siddirganj will be done for Tk 152.40 crore within 29 months.

PDB secretary Mohammad Sirajuddoula inked the agreements for PDB. Director Rehabilitation and Maintenance of Technopram signed the first while Power Plants and Construction Director and Chief representative of the company the second contract.

PDB chairman Qamrul Islam Siddique and officials of PDB and Russian Embassy in Dhaka were present in the signing ceremony.

“Both the units are expected to be operational to full capacity of 55MW on completion of the rehabilitation works under the contract,” said an official release.

It will also save money and time than replacement with two new units, it added.

PDB sources said rehabilitation of both the 55MW units of Ghorasal Power Station had long been overdue. The first one was installed in 1974 and the second in 1976. Normal lifetime of the units is considered 20-25 years.

Presently, they said, each of the units remained operational but irregular with an average production of 40 MW each.
