Shrimp stranded: No carrying ships available |

Some 121 containers of frozen shrimp ready for export remained stranded at Mongla port for the last 20 days for want of ships. Two ships –- MV Eagle Sky Voyage 232 and MV Dafa Voyage 143 – were scheduled to carry the shrimp containers. But as the ships failed to arrive the port as they were at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port since June 17 waiting to unload cargoes. Convenor of local Frozen Food Exporters Association, A Khaleq, in a statement Friday said if the shrimp containers are not loaded by June 30, the buyers might cancel the LCs rendering in serious problem and financial loss of about Tk 150 crore. The buyers from USA, Thailand, Japan and Canada reached agreements with local exporters to buy shrimp worth about Tk 250 crore. Khaleq also informed that shrimps worth Tk 50 crore were lying in different frozen factories for want of containers. Earlier, exporters brought about 150 containers at Mongla port of which 25 were already shipped by ‘MV Banglar Shikha’.
