Sherpur (UNB) – A Tk 130-crore project was taken up aiming to raise living standard of land-less, small and marginal farmers of Jamalpur, Sherpur and Mymensingh districts. IFAD, Bangladesh Government and the World Food Programme are jointly financing the five-year project titled Smallholder Agricultural Improvement Project (SAIP) to be completed by 2005. Agricultural Extension Department, LGED, selected banks and NGOs will implement the project. Over 1.31 lakh families including 13,000 tribal ones will be benefited directly by the project through crops diversification, community infrastructure development, vegetable gardening and cattle rearing. Officials said food production would be increased through crop diversification and loans would be disbursed among the land-less, poor and marginal farmers in the project area. Besides, the farmers would be given appropriate training on modern and scientific farming and sustainable technologies to increase their capacity, sources said.
