Dhaka (UNB)- The government is actively considering a raise in the price of gas soon citing the need of striking an adjustment with international tariffs. State Minister for Energy Professor Rafiqul Islam disclosed the government plan yesterday (Tuesday) while discussing power and energy scenario situation with newsmen. “For long, Bangladesh’s gas price has been much less than international prices. We have proposed to the cabinet for considering the necessary adjustment,” he said replying to a query at the press briefing. On the other hand, the price of gas extracted by the foreign companies is much higher than the market rates. “The government buys at a high rate and sells on the local market at less prices,” said the minister giving the other compulsion for the planned raise. “We have to consider it even if we want to reduce our loss on the local market.” Gas price was increased only once after the present government assumed power in 1996. |
