Khulna (UNB)- Production in Khulna Newsprint Mills has come down to 600 to 700 tons daily against the normal production of 3,000 tons due to acute financial crisis. Production Manager of the mill today said two out of three machines remained idle since last month because of shortage of pulp hampering supply of newsprint to the newspapers. He said the production was totally suspended June 29-30. Mill sources said they couldn’t import pulp from abroad due to shortage of fund. Low quality pulp is being procured from Sylhet SPPM. A ship loaded with 860 metric tons worth about Tk 52 lakh from Canada reached Mongla port on Monday. As per the request of the mill authorities BCIC agreed to secure customs clearance of the pulp by providing its own fund which is expected by tomorrow. The sources said Tk 10 crore is needed to modernize and remove the longstanding problems of the mill and restore normal production. |
