Bangladesh to seek grant from Japan |

Dhaka (UNB)- Bangladesh will seek grant from Japan for three public sector industries. Industries Minister Tofail Ahmed informed this to Japanese Ambassador Kazuyoshi Urabe when the latter called on him at his office yesterday. The three projects are augmentation of Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Factory (CUFL) for raising the ammonia production capacity from 1000 tons a day to 1200 tons. US$70 million will be required for the project. The additional ammonia will be used as raw material for Di-ammonium Phosphate (DAP) plant, which will be constructed near CUFL with suppliers’ credit from Japan at a cost of about US$90 million. The second project is to convert urea of CUFL from prilled to granular at a cost of about US$20 million. The third project is to set-up a central affluent treatment plant for leather industries costing US$8-10 million, said an official handout. The minister requested the Ambassador to take necessary arrangement before the ensuing visit of Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Moris to Bangladesh August 19-20 so that Bangladesh gets the financial assistance from Japan for the projects as debt-relief grant. He said, “Japan is the single largest donor to Bangladesh and Bangladesh highly values the Japanese assistance and help”. “The problems involving KAFCO is going to be resolved soon as things are moving in the right direction”, the Minister told the Ambassador. The Japanese envoy assured the Minister that the proposals would be placed in the bilateral meeting. “Japan is eager to expand bilateral trade and investment link with Bangladesh,” the Ambassador was quoted to have told the Minister. |
