Dhaka (UNB) - Three business bodies here yesterday expressed concern at the breakdown in the power grid and faults in transmission that hinder production causing huge losses to industrial sector. In a joint statement, MCCI President Latifur Rahman, BGMEA President Anisur Rahman Sinha and DCCI President Aftab ul Islam said in spite of repeated assurances during the last several months by the government, particularly the Energy Ministry, the situation has become perhaps all-time worse. The statement issued after the failure of national grid yesterday said this has generated widespread concern for the industrial sector, particularly the medium and small enterprises which do not have standby electricity generation facilities. They said garment industries which fall in this category have to lose Tk 2 crore per hour for load-shedding. There are 500 ready-made garment factories in and around Dhaka city. The statement said such situation is comparable to any national disaster and deserves to be tackled in that manner. It urged the government to immediately issue a white paper as to when the repair work of the major generation units will be completed and the same will go into generation. The three business organisations also demanded that government give details of the progress of BMR work going on in different generation units and the expected supply position by 1 October, 2000. They suggested that each sub-station in the city have a cell to respond round-the-clock to consumers' queries and complaints so industries can, if needed, reschedule production time in lieu of the period to be lost due to load-shedding. |
