The Rise of a Star
She rises while Titanic sinks! She is none but Kate Winslet. For
Kate Winslet it seemed that her destiny was to be in the performing
arts. Her lineage includes maternal grandparents who ran Reading
Repertory Theatre from their back garden, a late uncle who was a
West End actor, and parents who were stage actors.
Kate joined the 'family-business' in 1986 at age 11 when she began
acting lessons in Maidenhead and she secures her first acting role
in a Sugar Puffs (breakfast cereal) advert dancing with the Honey
Monster. She continued in a performing arts school and followed
graduation with roles in the British television drama Shrinks
(1988), followed by appearances in the television series Casualty
(1989), Dark Season (1991), Get Back (1992), and Anglo-Saxon
Attitudes (1993) and theatrical roles including Pandora in the
musical Adrian Mole, Wendy in Peter Pan, Sarah in A Game of Soldier,
and Geraldine in What the Butler Saw.
Her move into film came with Heavenly Creatures (1994) in which she
landed the starring role. The praise that she received from here
film debut proved to be well founded when Sense and Sensibility
(1995) star and screenwriter Emma Thompson and the producer cast her
at first sight for a role in which Kate earned herself an even
greater accolade of a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination from
the Academy.
Kate has continued to distinguish herself in other productions
including Jude (1996) and Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet (1996)
Her most successful movie to date was Titanic (1997), playing the
role of Rose Dewitt Bukater, an upper-class Philadelphian aboard the
ill-fated ocean-liner.
She earned her chance to break away from the syndrome — if not the
corset — once and for all with her Oscar- nominated performance
opposite heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron's widely-
viewed masterwork, Titanic, released in 1997.
On 22nd November 1998 Kate married assistant director Jim
Threapleton at All Saint's Church in Reading. You can find the news
article in the news archives at this site.
In 1998 Kate starred in the movie Hideous Kinky (1998) set in
Morocco and in 1999 starred in Holy Smoke (1999) and can be seen
opposite Harvey Keitel. Kate's forthcoming film is called Enigma
(2000). Kate and Jim are also expecting their first child.
