Khulna,
May 31 (UNB) – A court here today convicted notorious terrorist
Ershad Ali Shikdar and condemned him to death in the sensational night
guard Panna murder case.
The
Judge of the District Additional and Sessions Judge Court-3 sentenced
his six associates -- Jamai Farouk, Iddris Ali, Jalil Mellah, Alam
alias France Alam, Moti and Moktar -- to life term in jail in the
case.
Judge
Shamsul Arefin also fined the six Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer one
year more rigorous imprisonment. Of them, Moktar was tried in
absentia.
Court
said the Judge entered the courtroom at 12:30pm and handed down the
judgement in presence of the convicts.
They
said Ershad Shikdar was awarded death penalty as his guilt was proved
beyond doubt.
According
to prosecution, Panna, the night guard of Joragate in the town and a
witness of the commissioner Moslem Sardar murder case, was shot and
stabbed by a group of terrorists in Joragate area on Oct 16, 1997. He
died on his way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital from Khulna Medical
College Hospital.
As
a case filed against them in this connection, the court framed charges
on October 6, 1999 after investigation.
The
court examined 25 witnesses of the case in 13 working days.
