Naogaon,
Apr 22 (UNB) - Production of IRRI-Boro paddy may be hampered in the
district during the current season due to intermittent power supply
and low-voltage.
Agriculture
Extension Department sources said additional lands as against the
cultivation target of 1.48 lakh hectares were brought under IRRI-Boro
cultivation this year with a production target of 4.21 lakh mts of
paddy.
Irrigation
to IRRI-Boro paddy in 11 thanas of the district, where 2,011 deep and
shallow tubewells are run by power, is being seriously hampered due to
power shortage and low-voltage.
Some
farmers of Sapahar, Manda and Mahadebpur upazilas said they could not
irrigate their paddy fields even for 2-3 hours a day due to shortage
of power supply.
They
said they were inspired to cultivate IRRI-Boro on more lands due to
various reasons, including favourable weather condition, easy
availability of fertiliser and having no load shedding at very
beginning of the season.
Earlier,
a meeting of District Coordination Committee asked the authorities of
local PDB not to supply electricity in residential areas from 4am to
10am for the sake of irrigation.
But
the authorities concerned are not following the decision due to
unknown reason, the farmers alleged.
