Most Often Asked Questions on Pregnancy

What are the medical tests that are mandatory in pregnancy and what are optional?

A blood hierogram, blood count and blood grouping tests are a must. A urine test is also required,. We advise an Australia Antigen test to check hepatitis antibodies. The HIV test is optional but most hospitals prefer to have  it done  for the  safety of their staff, which is explained to the patients. One  blood sugar  test is definitely required and if the reading is not normal, more  will be required at various stages. Amniocentesis is not  mandatory, but  if the  woman is older, or has a history of abnormal babies, it is advised.

My mother has high blood pressure and so do I . Will this  make my pregnancy complicated? How  will it affect my baby and me?

If you have high blood pressure before conceiving, the  chances of superimposed toxemias of pregnancy are higher. You will have to  take a lot of care, undergo several tests, and  have your pregnancy monitored. You may  need. a Caesarian section or your  baby  may have to be delivered earlier.

I've  never had high blood pressure. Could I still develop it now? What will the warning signs be?  If I've  had pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy, is it a sure indicator that I will have it in my next?

You could develop high blood pressure during pregnancy, even if you haven't had the problem before . This is called pregnancy- induced hypertension. You will  know this when, during your ante natal check -up , your blood pressure readings are in the range of 130-80.

If you have had pre -eclampsia in your first pregnancy, it  does not necessarily mean you will  have it in your second pregnancy. But you are  definitely more pre- disposed.

Why does the Rh factor cause problems in a pregnancy and how can you provided complications ?

Only about five percent of us  are Rh negative. If  and Rh- negative woman has had an Rh- positive baby earlier and was not given immunization , anti-D antibodies will have formed in her  blood . If these go back to the  growing fetus in the next pregnancy, the baby may be moderately jaundiced, may need to be  delivered prematurely and  may need exchange transfusion. To prevent intra uterine death, the baby has to be given intra uterine exchange transfusion.  Complications can  be prevented by doing  a routine blood grouping for  pregnancy and  even during cases or abortion, and  by giving the  ante. Dejection to an Rh - negative mother who  has just delivered and Rh--positive baby.

Will lovemaking hurt my baby?

Generally, no, But, if you have had repeated abortions, avoid sex in the first few months. If you have premature contractions, avoid sex, and  after the seventh and eighth months, certainly avoid it, as it could  initiate labor. That's why in the past, women used to be sent to their parent's homes after the seventh month or so. But these days, having a supportive husband around is desirable.
