of setting up a free-trade agreement, officials said Saturday.
The
topic came up during a meeting between Prime Minister Goh Chok

ministers, said his Indian counterpart, Murasoli Maran, assured him of
taking a decision ‘shortly.’

Japan's
jobless rate remains at record high 4.9 percent

TOKYO,
APR 28 (UNB/AP) - Japan's unemployment rate in March stayed at a record
high 4.9 percent, but joblessness among men grew to its highest
level, the Management and Coordination Agency announced Friday.
The
overall figure was better than the 5.0 percent economists had forecast,
but the rise in the rate for men to 5.2 percent from February's
5.1 percent underscored the severity of the job situation.

as the implementing agency AES repeatedly declined to take over the
project site developed by Chinese experts.
CWHEC
completed the works of developing the site by November 15 last year and
the Power Development Board (PDB) asked AES to take over it from January 3
this year.

with Ekushey Television (ETV), the first non-government terrestrial and
satellite TV in the country.

receive rails from India

pound “A” rails from India worth over Tk 27 crore for the conversion
of 34km metre-gauge railway between Joydevpur and Dhaka to a dual-gauge
link against Indian state credits.
An
agreement in this regard was signed between Bangladesh Railway and Steel
Authority of India here today (Wednesday).

cashed in on early gains.
Japan's

or 0.8 percent, to close at 18,134.31 - its lowest point since closing at
18,080.38 points on Dec. 21. On Tuesday, the average closed down 207.82
points, or 1.1 percent.

APR 26 (AP) - Sony Corp. will join an alliance with two
other Japanese electronics makers, Fujitsu and Hitachi, to boost their
plasma-display panel businesses amid growing demand, the three
manufacturers said Wednesday.

will invest 5 billion yen (dlrs 47.3 million) to take a 15 percent
stake in Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display, established in

1999 to develop, manufacture and market the panels used for computer
monitors and TV sets.

APR 25 (AP) - First-quarter earnings of the world's largest chipmaker rose a
record 147 percent as robust international demand fueled increased exports,
the company announced Tuesday.
Taiwan
Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. recorded a net profit of 10.09 billion
Taiwan dollars (U.S. dlrs 325 million) from 4.09 billion Taiwan dollars
(U.S. dlrs 132 million) during the same period last year, the company said.

investment in Bangladesh would go as high as 1.5 billion to 2 billion
dollars if the projects that are proposed and are on line could be
implemented.

which has increased to 750 million dollars, he said adding, “It will be

French carmaker Renault's takeover of the bankrupt South Korean automative
firm, the chief creditor said.
Samsung's
16 creditor banks convened a meeting in Seoul after Renault reached a
tentative agreement to take over Samsung in negotiations in Paris this past
weekend.

African heads of state pledge cooperation

APR 25 (AP) - Chinese President Jiang Zemin and South
African president Thabo Mbeki agreed Tuesday not to interfere in the
internal affairs of other countries and to respect sovereignty.
During
Zemin's visit, the first by a Chinese head of state since South Africa and
the People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations on Jan. 1,
1998, a high-level binational commission was established to promote
dialogue and cooperation
between
the two countries. The United States and South Africa have established
a similar commission.

APR 25 (AP) - Singapore Airlines said Tuesday it had reached an agreement
with Brierley Investments, a major Air New Zealand shareholder, to acquire
a further 16.7 percent stake in the airline.
The
agreement raises Singapore Airlines' stake in Air New Zealand to
25 percent. Singapore Airlines acquired a 8.3 percent stake in the New
Zealand carrier on April 11.

YORK, APR 25 (AP) - International Paper Co., the world's leading paper
maker, is bidding dlrs 6.2 billion in cash and stock to acquire rival
Champion International Corp., hoping to unseat a competing offer from
Finnish paper company UPM-Kymmene.
Champion,
which is based in Connecticut, had agreed in February to be acquired by the
giant European forestry company, but a subsequent 20 percent slide in UPM's
share price caused the value of the UPM's all-stock offer to slip from dlrs
6.6 billion at the time it was announced to about dlrs 5 billion.

insurance company balks at paying for third-party suits

APR 22 (AP) - Microsoft Corp.'s general insurer has asked a federal
court that it not be required to pay for legal bills stemming
from the tide of third-party antitrust lawsuits filed in the
wake of the U.S. Justice Department case.
Both
Microsoft and Zurich American Insurance Inc. confirmed Friday
that they have each filed suit against the other over the issue.
Zurich American, which filed first, contends Microsoft's liability
insurance simply does not cover antitrust issues.

sinks to new low against dollar for second consecutive day

YORK, APR 21 (AP) - The euro fell to a new low Thursday for the second
consecutive session as the dollar staged a broad advance against major
currencies in quiet dealings.
The
single currency adopted last year by 11 European currencies
sank as low as 93.55 cents in afternoon trading in New York, just beneath
the low of 93.57 cents set Wednesday.
