South Africa, Pakistan tours to go ahead as planned

COLOMBO, MAY 5 (/AP) - Cricket tours by Pakistan and South Africa to Sri Lanka will go ahead as scheduled beginning June despite the country being put on war status to fight Tamil Tiger

rebels.

      

"The government will not object to the matches being played.

 

These tours are a commercial venture," said Rienzie Wijetilleke, chairman of the country's cricket board.

Kapil will sue over match fixing allegation

May 6, 2000 

  

NEW DELHI, MAY 5 (AP) - Kapil Dev, India's former cricket captain, will sue a cricket board official for alleging that he offered money to a player to under-perform, newspapers reported

Friday.

      

Dev denied cricket board official Inderjit Singh Bindra comments quoting player Manoj Prabhakar as saying he was offered dlrs 25,000 to underplay during a match against Sri Lanka in 1994, the reports said.

ACB to appoint corruption investigator

May 6, 2000  

  

MELBOURNE, MAY 5 (AP) - The Australian Cricket Board will appoint an independent investigator to examine allegations of bribery or match fixing, cricket's national governing body said Friday.

      

The decision comes in the wake of an International Cricket Council emergency summit in London earlier this week, called in response to admissions last month by South African skipper Hansie Cronje that he received money from an Indian bookmaker.

Brett Lee undergoes surgery to both ankles

May 4, 2000 

    

SYDNEY, MAY 3 (AP) - Australian fast bowler Brett Lee was recovering Wednesday in a Sydney Hospital after surgery to correct bone spurs to the back of both ankles.

     

Lee, who had been experiencing pain in his ankles for the last two seasons, said he timed his surgery to coincide with Australia's off-season.

Donald on the stretcher 

May 3, 2000 

LONDON, May 2: Warwickshire's South African fast bowler Allan Donald was carried off on a stretcher with a suspected broken rib after a freak accident in an English National League match on Monday. 

Donald, playing against Hampshire at Southampton, successfully caught a skied on-drive from Australian Shane Warne but fell backwards on to the top of the boundary fence as he did so.

He collapsed in agony, clutching the right side of his lower back. Players from both sides, including Warne, surrounded him.

Dravid helped Kent complete a seven-wicket win

Rahul Dravid helped Kent complete a seven-wicket win over top-flight new boys Northamptonshire at Canterbury in the English National League on Monday.  

 

In a low-scoring contest, Northamtonshore put in by Kent captain Matthew Fleming was dismissed for only 76 with Ben Phillips returning competition-best figures of four for 25.

Lord MacLaurin, Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), made his claims as the International Cricket Council (ICC) met at Lord's for a two day emergency meeting.

Steve Waugh has earned a financial windfall

BRISBANE, MAY 1 (AP) - Steve Waugh has earned a financial windfall for leading Australia to its most successful summer ever, gaining an upgraded contract Monday with the Australian Cricket Board.

 

For leading Australia to its 14-game unbeaten stretch in limited-overs internationals and to 10 successive test wins, Waugh was rewarded with a payrise of 95,000 Australian dollars (U.S. dlrs 57,000).

Khan, Akram century lifts Pakistan over West Indies Under-23s

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, APR 30 (AP) - An unbeaten century by Younis Khan and a five-wicket haul by Mohammad Akram lifted Pakistan to a strong position over the West Indies Under-23s on the third day of their four-day, first-class cricket match on Saturday.

 

Khan pummeled five sixes and nine fours in an unbeaten 103 as Pakistan declared their second innings at 172 for four after Akram captured five for 16 to help dismiss the Under-23s for 143 in their first innings. It gave the Pakistanis a first-innings lead of 156.

Bindra preparing document for CBI

New Delhi, April 30:Former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India Inderjit Singh Bindra has said that he is preparing a detailed document on cricket match-fixing that he would hand over to the CBI, which has been asked to investigate the controversy.

 

"I am not saying give me one month. Within a week's time, I will give them a document. I have been producing a document for last four days, I am dictating it. I will give a booklet of to 100 pages, with whatever little circumstantial evidence I have," he told Janata ki Adalat programe telecast today.
