Cricket
was jolted this month when Indian police charged Cronje and
three teammates with fraud, conspiracy, and deceiving and defrauding
spectators. An Indian bookie and a film actor were arrested
for involvement in match fixing and betting which, though illegal in
India, involves money running into millions of dollars.

judicial inquiry into allegations of match-fixing against former South
African captain Hansie Cronje will be launched in Johannesburg on Monday,
the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) announced.
Bronwyn Wilkinson, communications manager of the
UCB, said Sunday a
judge was expected to be named Monday and discussions would start
immediately to establish terms of reference.
Wilkinson said the UCB and the government departments of justice and
sport would jointly brief the appointed judge.

If proven to be genuine, the transcript appears to confirm that Cronje was

Others will follow suit as an
ostracized Cronje will realize the extent

United Cricket Board of SA on Tuesday withdrew captain Hansie
Cronje from an upcoming series against Australia after officials said
Cronje told them he had not been "entirely honest" in his
denials of a match-fixing scandal, according to the South African Press
Association.
Cronje,
opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs, left-arm spinner Nicky Boje and batsman Pieter
Strydom have been accused of accepting bribes from an Indian bookie to lose
matches during their one-day international series in India earlier this month.
All four have said they are innocent.

Warne named in top five
players of 20th Century

APR 5 (UNB/AP) - Australian leg spinner Shane Warne is the only present
day player named in Wisden's list of the top five cricketers of
the 20th century.
The
respected cricket almanac commissioned a poll of 100 cricketers
and journalists and announced the results Wednesday, with Aussie master
batsman Don Bradman edging West Indian all rounder Gary Sobers by 10 votes
for the top position.

A salute to Shane Warne

Australian Shane Warne re-wrote the record books on
March 15, 2000 at Auckland, New Zealand when he became the highest
wicket-taker for his country. He had Kiwi tail-ender Paul Wiseman caught
by wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist as Australia recorded it's eighth
consecutive Test match win to defeat the home side by 62 run.
In
all 10 bowlers have had the distinction of holding the Australian record
for the maximum Test wickets at various stages in Test history. Paceman
Frederick Spofforth was the first Australian bowler to take 50 wickets in
1882-83.

limited-overs game, Indian cricket coach Kapil Dev indicated yesterday.
