Injuries may mar the Sharjah show

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, March 30 (AFP): Pakistan and South Africa are beset by Injuries to key players as they prepare for the Sharjah Cup one-day final here Friday.

 

Seasoned opener Gary Kirsten's back injury, sustained during Tuesday's league clash against Pakistan, is so serious he may even miss South Africa's three-match series against Australia next month.

 

Pakistan are likely to field tear away Shoaib Akhtar and all rounder Wasim Akram despite the duo carrying niggling groin injuries.

Ganguly blames batsmen

Mumbai: Batsmen on the team did not apply themselves properly which resulted in a disappointing batting performance, feels Indian cricket skipper Saurav Ganguly on his return from Sharjah. 

 

Ganguly arrived in Mumbai from Sharjah on Thursday by an early morning flight along with five others - Rahul Dravid, Venkatesh Prasad, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath and wicketkeeper Syed Saba Karim. The other members of the team are expected later in the day.

 

In a frank chat inside the Indian team's bus while waiting for the connecting flight to Calcutta. Ganguly termed the failure of batting as one of the main reasons of India's defeat. "The batting was very disappointing," he added.

Mumbai: A fearsome burst of fast bowling by Shoaib Akhtar propelled Pakistan into the finals of the Sharjah tournament. It was a significant win not only because it got Pakistan in the finals by right and not through the run rate equation but also because it broken the sequence of wins that South Africa had over them

 

Amazingly Pakistan had not won a one-day game against South Africa since 1994 and therefore the win will even the psychological superiority that South Africa had exercised over their talented but unpredictable opponents.

Kingston, Mar 28 (Agencies): West Indies Courtney Walsh admitted to being 'drained' afte becoming Test cricket's record wicket-taker of all time.

 

It had been a long time in coming-16 years, in fact. But Walsh Knew Monday was going to be his day to break the Test wicket-taking record.

 

After quickly removing both Zimbabwean openers, Trevor Gripper and Grant Flower, Walsh watched from the outfield as his pace colleagues reduced Zimbabwe's innings to ruins and the remaining wicket opportunities became limited.

Captain Jimmy Adams led a brilliant fight back to keep the West Indies in with a great chance of victory in the second Test against Zimbabwe in Jamaica.

Adams and fast bowler Franklyn Rose produced an unbeaten eighth wicket stand of 125 to take the home side to within 13 runs of Zimbabwe's first innings total of 308 at the close of the third day.

A comedy of errors forced Bangladesh A team to share the title of the Tri-nation Malaysian Cricket Challenge tournament for ICC's associate members with Namibia associate members with Namibia after Thursday's final was washed out due to rain in Kuala Lumpur.

 

Namibia were tow-time lucky to be declared joint champions with the hot favorites Bangladesh who should have been awarded the trophy according to bye-laws.

 

But the tournament committee stepped outside the law and awarded the honor to both teams 'in better interest cricket', according to a message received in Dhaka.

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Mar 21(Internaet report): Sharjah, the venue for the triangular series which begins tomorrow involving South Africa, India and Pakistan should be a welcome improvement on India for the touring South African cricket team.

 

This Islamic country borders the Indian Ocean and it's more moderate climate must surely be a welcome relief to the dehydrated South Africans who suffered so badly in the humidity of India.

Buoyed by the success in Nagpur, the South Africans have arrived in Sharjah with the idea of kicking up a desert storm of their own over the next 10 days wile plotting ahead for the limited-over series against Australia next month.

 

The third country involved, Pakistan are trying to regroup after Sri Lanka did more than enough to re-establish their image as the Kings of Asia.

Bangladesh A Meets Namibia in final tomorrow

Rain  also washed out the second-leg match between Bangladesh A and Namibia in the Trination Tournament on Tuesday at Killat Aman ground in Kuala Lumpur, according to a message received in Dhaka.

Bangladesh completed the double-leg matches with six points which included two victories against Malaysia. The first-leg match between the two countries was also spoiled by rain.

Sydney, Mar 15 (Reuters /AP): Shane Warne added another chapter to his remarkable career today when he passed Dennis Lillee’s record for the most Test wickets by an Australian bowler.

The flamboyant leg-spinner finally edged past Lillee’s Test tally of 355 wickets when New Zealand tail ender Paul Wiseman gloved a simple catch to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist to hand Australia victory in Auckland.

While Warne’s 356th Test scalp may not have been as spectacular as some of his previous wickets, it still ranked among the most significant of his career.

Warne said the pressure of going for the record had affected him.

"Anwar came to us and told us that due to health problems and pressure he want to step down from captaincy and would like to concentrate on his bating," Yawar Saeed, director of Cricket Board told reporters.

Hasibul out for five week

Injured pacer Hasibul Hossain may have to stay out of action at least for five weeks, doctors said.

Having the X-ray, MRI and CT Scan don’t Thursday, doctors advised him to take complete rest to let his damaged left-knee enough time to recuperate.

“They said it had torn some ligament, causing serious internal hemorrhage there. The knee is now badly swollen and sore. I’m not being able to move without the help of crutches,” Hasibul, the strike bowler of the Abaahani Krira Chakra said to The Daily star Sport last night.

JOHANNESBURG, March 6 (Reuters)- South Africa’s historic test series win in India earned praise from the government on Monday, despite the uneasy peace which exists between cricket administrators and politicians.
