DEPZ factory tried in vain to resume production

May 7, 2000

 

Savar, May 6 (UNB)- The owners of the troubled Ring Shine Textile today tried in vain to resume production as many of the factory workers refrained from joining duties for fear of arrest.

 

An executive of the Singapore-Malaysian joint-venture sweater factory today (Saturday) said they had already asked their workers to join work.

DSE rises

May 7, 2000

 

Dhaka, May 6 (UNB) – Week’s trading at Dhaka Stock Exchange began today (Saturday) with a rise in its benchmark as the gainers dominated over the losers.

 

All Share Price Index at the country's main bourse gained 2.44 points or 0.47 per cent to close at 516.85 points from Thursday’s 514.41 points.

Chittagong, May 6 (UNB) – Trading at the Chittagong Stock Exchange finished higher on the opening day of the week today (Saturday) as the gainers outnumbered the losers.

 

All Share Price Index at the country’s second bourse gained 3.79 points or 0.35 percent to close at 1087.43 points from Thursday’s 1083.64 points.

Call for NGOs and Individuals to change poverty scenario of the country

Dhaka, May 5 (UNB) – Bangladesh had been confined to a vicious cycle of low growth in the previous 40 years with average GDP only around one percent and just began to take off.

 

“The present government since assuming power could maintain a 5 percent-plus annual GDP,” Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria  said elaborating on various economic and social indicators that showed socioeconomic progress of the nation.

Globalization has had big impact on transport makers

GENEVA, MAY 5 (AP) - Vehicle makers may end up as simply marketers of a brand name who provide credit and insurance for customers, while the Internet could soon make car dealerships a thing of the past, according to a U.N. report issued Friday.

 

The International Labor Organization report on transport manufacturing said globalization has changed the industry and outside component makers are becoming more and more important.

HONG KONG, MAY 4 (AP) - The dominant Hong Kong phone company said Thursday its annual earnings plunged by 90 percent to 1.14 billion Hong Kong dollars (U.S. dlrs 146.5 million) as it took massive write-offs on obsolete equipment.

Initiative to resolve conflict over Meghnaghat power plant

NEW YORK, MAY 2 (AP) - A nasty corporate dispute has accomplished what none of ABC's rivals could do: force millions of viewers to watch something other than "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

  

An estimated 3.5 million Time Warner cable customers were in their second day without ABC programming Tuesday after missing the first celebrity edition of the hit game show in prime-time Monday night.

Taiwanese computer investment surges in China

TAIPEI, MAY 1 (AP) - Taiwanese investment in computer and other hi-tech projects in rival China surged 330 percent to U.S. dollars 320 million in the first quarter this year, the government said Monday.

      

Officials said more Taiwanese computer firms were setting up factories in China, attracted by its vast market and ample supply of engineers and other technicians.

“Trade union in EPZs would make investors shy away”, FICCI president

Dhaka, Apr 30 (UNB)- As the American ambassador reminded Bangladesh of past commitment to allowing trade union in EPZs, the foreign investors’ chamber here today came up with a split view about the much-debated issue. 

 

Incumbent president of the chamber Waliur Rahman Bhuiyan viewed that allowing trade union in EPZs would make foreign investors shy away while former president Mahbub Jamil said workers’ issue should not be a matter of concern for foreign companies.

Japanese companies turning to part-timers to cut costs

May 1, 2000

  

TOKYO, APR 30 (AP) - With Japan's economy stuck in its deepest rut in decades, employers who used to guarantee jobs for life are now turning more to part-time workers to cut costs, a report said Sunday.

 

During the fiscal year that ended March 31, companies surveyed by the Labor Ministry said they employed 1 percent fewer full-time workers but 3 percent more part-time workers than they did the previous year, quasi-public broadcaster NHK reported.
