Shoaib Akhtar released by Notts

Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been released from his contract by Notts due to a potentially career threatening stress fracture. Coach Clive Rice and the Notts committee say they will stand by Shoaib, but will plan for the rest of the season on the assumption that he will not be able to play for the county this year. Gibbs is withdrawn from the touring squad

On Friday 2 June 2000, it was conveyed to the United Cricket Board by legal representatives for Mr Herschelle Gibbs, that he admitted having been approached with a view to match fixing, that he had agreed to participate in this regard (but in the event did not do so and received no money), and that previous denials he had made to the UCBSA in that respect had not been true.

Mr Gibbs has now confirmed this in evidence before the King Commission yesterday. The UCBSA welcomes the fact that Mr Gibbs has taken this step.
