Proper distribution of loan helped attain food autarky
September 14, 2000
Sangsad (UNB) - Finance
Minister Shah AMS Kibria yesterday said the reason behind attaining
the food autarky this year is the proper distribution of
agricultural loan to the farmers, particularly to the marginal
farmers. "We are distributing over Tk 3000 crore as the
agriculture loan in the current year (1999-2000) while it was Tk
3270 crore in last year. Agri loan distributed in our time is
almost double of the loans distributed during role of the
previous government," he told the House replying to a question
from Kazi Sirajul Islam. The Finance Minister informed the House
that the government the government is thinking to introduce
agricultural insurance but has no plan to waive the agriculture
loan, it could be deferred only. If the flow of loan is
disturbed then the farmer becomes the victim of it, he said now
the peasants know that they will get fresh loans if they return
the money and added that agriculture recovery rate is highest in
comparison to all times. Replying to a supplementary from
Sagufta Yeasmin, the minister said just now the government has no
plan set up separate bank for the women entrepreneurs because he
said the existing banks are giving special incentive and
facilities for the women entrepreneurs. He said that the
government has a plan to set up Agriculture Banks at every unions
of the country for the convenience of the farmer, who are
contributing significantly in the country's economy. About the
default culture he said the government has taken various
effective measures for removing this bad culture from this
country. For close monitoring of the government now loans are
distributing to the people without any corruption. Recovery rate
is also increasing day by day for the steps taken by the present
government, Kibiria said informing the house that the government
has introduced bankruptcy court to take action against the loan
defaulters. Replying to a question about the reduction of
interest rate, he said interest rate is low in some prioritized
sector and government has done this for encouraging the
export-oriented industrial growth.
